BERLIN (Hollywood Reporter) – "John Rabe," a historic biopic about the German businessman who saved 200,000 Chinese civilians from the Nanking massacre, is the front-runner for this year's German Film Awards, or Lolas, with seven nominations.
The film's nominations include best film, best director for Florian Gallenberger and a best actor mention for star Ulrich Tukur.
Steve Buscemi picked up a nomination as best supporting actor for his role as an idealistic American doctor who helps Rabe. It is one of the few Lola nominations ever given to a non-German actor.
Uli Edel's Golden Globe and Oscar-nominated terrorist drama "The Baader Meinhof Complex" picked up four nominations, including best film and best actress, for Johanna Wokalek.
"Chiko," a gangster movie by first-time director Ozgur Yildirim, surprised many by nabbing a best film nomination along with nods for Yildirim's screenplay, lead actor Denis Moschitto and editor Sebastian Thumler.
Other best film nominees are family drama "A Year Ago in Winter" from Oscar winner Caroline Link, Christian Petzold's "Jerichow" and the sex-over-60 comedy-drama "Cloud 9" from Andreas Dresen.
Veteran actor Josef Bierbichler received a best actor nomination for his performance as a thoughtful painter in "A Year Ago in Winter."
Anna Maria Muhe, the daughter of late actor Ulrich Muhe ("The Lives of Others"), was nominated in the best actress category for her double role as mother and daughter in Christian Schwochow's "November Child." Ursula Werner picked up a nod in the same category for her starring role in "Cloud 9."
The winners of the 2009 Lolas will be announced April 24 in Berlin.
