It's been a sad few days for fans of "One Life to Live" as we have lost yet another indelible member of the show's extended family. On February 6th, 2009 Phil Carey who played Asa Buchanan for 28 years passed on. He was 83.
Phil was born in 1925 in Hackensack, NJ but grew up on Long Island in New York. He started acting in the early 1950s and starred in several films including "Calamity Jane" and "This Woman is Dangerous" with Joan Crawford.
He originated the role of Asa, Texan patriarch of Buchanan family, in 1979 and was a regular character on the show until 2007 when failing health hastened his departure from the show. He most recently appeared on the show in December in a video statement revealing David Vickers as the long lost Buchanan heir.

Anyone who has ever watched "OLTL" remembers Asa's many marriages (14), his fierce pride in the Buchanan family, his frequent use of the words "woman" and "she-devil" (when referring to Blair, mostly) and a wonderful charmisma that stole every scene he was in.
A cause of death was not released, but Phil had been suffering from lung cancer since 2006. He was married twice and has five children. Linda, Jeffrey and Lisa were born to his first wife, Maureen Peppler. His children Shannon and Sean were from his second marriage to Colleen Welch.
Phil Carey will be missed by all he knew him, most especially his loyal fans for whom no Buchanan reunion will ever be the same without him. Thanks for the memories, Phil.
