{allmovies} Oscar greenroom will be bathed in beiges, pale grays

The 1970s may have been a bust in fashion (remember bell-bottoms?), but interior design from that era had a certain glamour, says interior designer Stephen Shadley, who designed the Architectural Digest greenroom for the Feb. 22 Oscars.

A former movie scenic artist, Shadley says his greenroom was inspired by a 1970 house he's redoing in L.A. "They're calling it '70s Modern, but a friend called it Rational Glamour," says Shadley, who is known for doing the digs of such stars as Woody Allen, Robert Altman and Penny Marshall.

His greenroom will have a monochromatic color scheme (pale grays, beiges, brown, charcoal) with Baker furniture (period oversized sofa, vintage and reissued chairs, tables and stools) and vintage accessories. "There's going to be a vast array of colors and textures in the gowns, so the room should be understated. You don't want the room to upstage a beautiful gown."

One unusual touch: a huge photographic backdrop of the L.A. skyline at night, backlit to create the illusion of a window with a view. "When you enter," he says, "I hope it will take you out of yourself for a moment. You'll (say), 'Oh, this is interesting.' "
