{allmovies} Connolly's ex got advice from 'Into You'

TORONTO - Kevin Connolly says he was already well-acquainted with the blunt relationship advice book "He's Just Not That Into You" long before he signed on to the film it inspired.

"I had an ex-girlfriend that had it sort of placed on the nightstand, like the Bible, that she was sort of was always reading - hemming and hawing - and like, asking me strange questions in the middle of the night," Connolly, one of a slew of stars in the romantic comedy that opens Friday, said in a phone interview from Los Angeles.

"So at one point when she wasn't there I kind of said: 'I've got to see what's going on over here.' I took the book and kind of leafed through it and said: 'OK, now I get it. Now I see what she's complaining about."'

The book, from "Sex and the City" scribes Greg Behrendt and Liz Tuccillo, was a phenomenon when it came out in 2004, with its searing honesty on matters of the heart. Oprah Winfrey declared the title to be "six little words that could change your life."

The film version stars Connolly, Scarlett Johansson, Jennifer Connelly, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Aniston, Ginnifer Goodwin, Ben Affleck, Justin Long and Drew Barrymore as a group of 20-and 30-somethings trying to find, and keep, love in Baltimore. Barrymore is also an executive producer on the feature, directed by Ken Kwapis ("The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants").

Connolly - who recently earned a Golden Globe nomination for his role as Vince's manager Eric on the hit HBO series "Entourage" - said he was one of the first actors to sign on to the film and was humbled when he saw the calibre of talent that followed.

"Bradley Cooper and I joked around - I said: 'Bradley, good thing we got on this movie when we did - before some of these other people got on - or we probably wouldn't have gotten the job,"' said the 34-year-old, who hails from Long Island, N.Y.

Connolly plays Conor, a real-estate agent head over heels for yoga instructor Anna (the fetching Johansson). She, however, has her sights set on Ben (Cooper), who is married to Janine (Connelly).

"Scarlett Johansson, I think, can send people to kookiness, you know?" Connolly said with a laugh as he discussed Conor's relentless pursuit of unrequited love. "Scarlett Johansson can make most men behave that way."

Conor provides a nice balance to the film, said Connolly.

"My character is sort of the one storyline that sort of calls out women a little bit," said Connolly, who played the eldest son in the 1990s sitcom "Unhappily Ever After."

"I always tell people, like, my guy friends: 'It's not a man-bashing movie by any stretch of the imagination.' It's not like, 'He's Just Not That Into You,' let's all make a movie about how terrible guys are. It's pretty even."

"Entourage," Season Six, starts filming March 10 and Connolly said he's itching to return to the set of the testosterone-fuelled show that also stars Adrian Grenier, Jeremy Piven, Kevin Dillon and Jerry Ferrara.

"I cannot wait to get back into the fish bowl," said Connolly. "It's where I'm most comfortable."
