TORONTO - Hundreds of young "Twilight" fans swooned, shrieked and professed their devotion as the cast of the teen vampire movie arrived in Toronto to discuss the highly anticipated film Saturday.
A constant downpour did nothing to dampen the ardour of mostly teenage girls who staked out the stars' appearance at MuchMusic hours - and even days - in advance, some clutching roses as tokens of their adoration.
The fan frenzy clogged a downtown street where hundreds of young people crammed along an outdoor stage, many chanting the name of the 22-year-old heartthrob that plays the irresistible vampire Edward Cullen, Robert Pattinson.
Roughly 200 more waited inside for a live interview that was to include their questions for stars Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Rachelle Lefevre and Nikki Reed.
"We knew that we had a fan base who loved the book - like a fanatical fanbase - but we thought it was rather exclusive.... we had no idea (of the extent)," 18-year-old Stewart, who plays heroine Bella Swan, said earlier about the pandemonium that has followed the cast at public appearances in the United States.
"It's cool, I'm just as passionate about the story as they are. It's such a personal thing that I've gone through, to watch masses of people be as into it as us is sort of like, (it's) great we did this. We put blood and sweat and everything (into this)."
For Montreal actress Lefevre, who plays the villainous Victoria, such intense scrutiny has been overwhelming at times.
But the lanky redhead says she's been delighted overall by the attention and the passion displayed by fans.
"It's the closest I will ever come in my life to being a rock star," Lefevre, 29, quipped from the comfort of a swank downtown hotel earlier in the day.
"It's been pretty amazing to be on the receiving end of so much support and adoration and excitement. The anticipation has been very great, but really I just feel really lucky. I'm from Montreal and now I'm coming home to Canada and instead of coming home just to see family I'm coming home to do a press tour. It's kind of surreal."
Based on the bestselling book series by Stephenie Meyer, "Twilight" chronicles the forbidden love affair of a 17-year-old girl, played by Stewart, and a century-old vampire in a 17-year-old boy's body, played by Pattinson.
Although the young-adult novel was a runaway hit, early sensation over the yet-to-be-released film has caught everyone by surprise, said Stewart and Lefevre, both relative unknowns before they signed on to the teen romance flick.
MuchMusic estimated that roughly 1,500 kids showed up for the televised appearance, and said crowds began forming as early as two days in advance.
Excited tweens Roberta Delville and Charlotte Huang said they turned up at 9 a.m. Saturday so that they could get a glimpse of Pattinson and the rest of the cast.
"I read all the series three times," boasted Huang.
"After you read the book, you're like, obsessed with Edward Cullen," added Delville.
"Yeah, he's the best," said Huang.
"Twilight" hits theatres Nov. 21.
