In Quantum of Solace, he plays the latest James Bond villain — and he has no scars or other deformity that typically has marked the larger-than-life foes of 007.
"I have nothing on my face to show I am a Bond villain," says Amalric, 43. "It's less scary to have an eye that bleeds. It helps you say, 'Ah-ha! He's the villain.' Here — nothing."
Amalric's Dominic Greene is a billionaire who claims to be an environmental crusader but is really a boss in a terrorism group known as Quantum, which plans a coup in Bolivia as a first step toward manipulating the world's drinking water.
Eventually, Greene does collect his share of scars, but the character is more of a thinker than a brawler. Politicians were an inspiration for the actor. "The smile can be a weapon," Amalric says. "You try to understand what is behind those guys, and those women, because they are great actors."
Hypocrisy and secrecy are evil qualities in Greene — whose very name deceives. He's trying to conquer Earth, not save it.
Says producer Michael G. Wilson: "This is about water and water shortages. We thought if things got really bad, this could happen. … Everyone needs resources, and so everybody is going to be fighting over them."
